Living Purposely

January 3, 2021

If your life is anything like mine, you’re pulled in multiple directions daily. And it can feel overwhelming. One way to overcome that is to create a Life Purpose Statement, which helps you clarify the direction you desire to go. There are a ton of books, articles, etc., that talks about the value of doing it. Thinking through and writing down a Life Purpose Statement empowers you to say yes to the things you know will lead you where you hope to go, and it enables you to say no to those things that don’t.

Jesus knew his Life Purpose, and when things got extremely difficult, he kept to the path he knew our heavenly Father wanted him to walk. He also knew when to say no to good things other people wanted him to do, so he could focus on doing the things he was sent to do.

In Mark 1:35-39, we see an example of Jesus doing this, “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!” Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.”

Is it “good” to heal people of sickness and injuries? Yes! Is it better to share the Gospel with people so that they can become God’s child for eternity? Absolutely!!! Jesus knew he was called and gifted to proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom and make it possible for people to be reconciled to God through the cross.

If you are struggling with what God wants you to do, let me encourage you to do the following. Ask yourself, what are the essential things in my life? Moreover, ask yourself, what do I want to be known for when I die or what do I hope people say about me in my eulogy? Make sure you write your answers down. Next, spend time in prayer, seeking clarity on what our heavenly Father has uniquely called and gifted you to accomplish. Finally, craft a short (one or two short sentence) Life Purpose statement.

After doing this, place it where you can see it every day. You’ll be amazed how it will begin to give you greater and greater clarity about how you should steward your life to accomplish God’s will for his glory. I believe this is a great way to make sure you fulfill your Life Purpose in 2021 and beyond.

Grace & Peace,

Rev. Jamie George
